Cloud or VPS

We often get asked: What is the difference between a Cloud server and a VPS?

The Traditional VPS

Virtual Private Servers, or VPS, have been around for a number of years. They were the hosting industry's early answer to providing a dedicated style environment but with lower prices.

Over time, VPS became the typical path taken for many projects and businesses as they outgrew standard shared hosting or required more control over their environment. In response to this requirement, the VPS was a good solution; it provided more control, more resources and isolation. Where a typical VPS faced limits was in its self-contained nature; local storage meaning each VPS was tied to running on one physical server - if that server was offline then so were all the VPS contained within it. Because of this tethered approach to storage and resource allocation, it would often not be possible to increase resources allocated to a VPS because the physical server on which it resided was fully provisioned.

Cloud Servers - VPS Reborn

Cloud servers take the concept of providing a secure, contained environment with all the benefits of dedicated hosting at a fraction of the costs, and bring the service bang up-to-date for the demands of the modern web, adding essential features such as:

  •     Redundant storage architecture, detached from the processing hardware - removing the tethered storage approach that limits VPS so heavily.
  •     Instant scalability of processing power, storage and bandwidth - no longer reliant on available capacity of any one physical server.
  •     Fault-tolerant infrastructure with automatic failover - if a physical server is offline, your Cloud server remains online.

The ability to consume resources on demand, and only pay for the resources you consume, are amazing new concepts in Cloud servers. You no longer have to try and second guess your needs for 3 or 6 months time. No longer do you have to deploy and pay for resources not yet required. Cloud servers allow you to scale with your immediate plans and all the time provide a completely redundant infrastructure to keep your operations online.

Your Piece of the Pie... or cake...

(Everyone loves cake, right?)

A traditional VPS is like a fixed-size slice of a single layered cake, with your app, store, or website the delicious frosting on top. You have your cake, and when that's been consumed the cake is all gone.

A Cloud server is a slice of a multi-layered cake, but not from just one cake, a hundred cakes, a thousand cakes. And not just a fixed size slice - any size! So, if you're hungry - just take another slice, and another, and another...

There's enough cake for everyone, come join the party!
