Digital Readiness & AI Adoption: Are UK businesses ready?

The way businesses operate has changed a lot in recent years. We surveyed UK small businesses as part of the wider team.blue group to understand how they are keeping up — and what is holding them back.

The digital landscape is moving fast

Even the smallest companies can now reach a national or global audience online. At the same time, new technologies are arriving quickly, with AI leading much of that change.

We wanted to understand how UK businesses are keeping up. Are they confident with digital tools? Are they using AI in a meaningful way? And what is holding them back?

Key insights at a glance

  • 1 in 5 small businesses are already using AI in a significant way
  • Younger and smaller businesses are adopting AI faster
  • More than 80% of SMEs have a website
  • Most websites are still used as a basic online presence rather than a growth tool

Strong foundations, limited depth

Most UK small businesses now have the basics in place. A website is common, and social media is widely used.

But many of these tools are underused. Websites often act as simple digital brochures rather than active sales channels. More advanced tools, such as collaboration platforms or compliance solutions, are less common.

This suggests that while businesses are online, they are not always getting full value from their setup.

Confidence grows with scale

Confidence in digital decision-making varies. On average, businesses rate themselves around 6 out of 10.

Larger organisations feel more confident. This is likely because they have dedicated teams or specialists who manage digital tools. Smaller businesses often rely on one person to handle everything, which can slow progress.

AI adoption is increasing, but uneven

AI is already making an impact. Around one in five businesses say they use it regularly, and many others are testing it.

However, adoption is not consistent. Newer businesses tend to be more open to change. More established companies often stick with existing processes that already work for them.

Trust remains a barrier

Despite growing interest, trust is still a concern.

  • Nearly half of businesses trust AI less than human input
  • Over 80% worry about reliability, privacy, and data security

These concerns are not surprising. Many businesses want reassurance before relying on AI for important tasks.

Businesses want clearer guidance

A common theme from the survey was uncertainty. Many SMEs are not sure where to start with newer technologies.

  • A quarter want simple, step-by-step guidance
  • Around one in five would value training or workshops

There is a clear demand for straightforward advice and support that feels practical and trustworthy.

What this means for UK businesses

UK SMEs are active online, but there is still room to grow. Progress is not being held back by lack of interest — it is more about time, skills, and clarity.

AI adoption will continue, but it needs to feel safe and accessible. Businesses are looking for tools and partners that make digital progress easier, not more complex.
